Network of African People Living with HIV and AIDS for Southern Africa Region (NAPSAR+)
NAP+SAR is an Apex Institution of organisations and networks/associations of people living with HIV in the SADC region. NAP+SAR, is affiliated to the Global Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS (GNP+) and Network of African People Living with HIV (NAP+).
Vision
A Southern Africa region, indeed a world, in which women, men, children, and youth living with and affected by HIV and AIDS enjoy dignity, rights, freedoms, opportunities and responsibilities without discrimination.
Mission
Improved quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS, through strengthening capacities and skills of national networks and associations of people living with HIV and AIDS in co-ordination and networking, advocacy and collaboration, and information sharing.
Key areas of activity
- To create awareness on HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa through a personal experiential approach, while emphasizing the particular vulnerability of young people to HIV infection.
- To encourage formation of national networks and support groups of People Living with HIV and AIDS where they are non-existent and strengthen existing ones.
- To lobby African governments to protect the basic human rights of all People Living with HIV and AIDS, including the right to health care, employment, travel, insurance, and the right to marry, among others.
- To advocate for all biomedical and social research on HIV and AIDS and involving PLHIV to be ethical, clearly explained, strictly monitored, that the participants share the benefits of their outcome, and are fully insured against the potential negative effects of some research drug trials.
- To lobby for full participation of people living with HIV and AIDS in relevant decision-making bodies at local, national, regional, and international levels.
- To strengthen alliances and partnerships with relevant bodies and agencies working on HIV and AIDS nationally, regionally, and internationally for the benefit of PLHIV in the region.
- To advocate and represent the interests and rights of PLHIV; in particular to increase access to drugs for the treatment of opportunistic infections, and improved and sustainable provision of care and support of PLHIV.
- To facilitate, advocate for, and influence meaningful involvement of PLHIV in relevant forums, programmes, social and economic development activities, nationally, regionally, and internationally.
